Mac OS X

From DocForge

(Redirected from MacOS X)

Mac OS X is Apple's flagship operating system which comes pre-installed on all of their desktop and laptop computers.

Steve Jobs pronounces it "Oh-Ess-Ten" in all his SteveNotes, but it has been known to be referred to as "Oh-Ess-Ex" as well. Mac purists, however, do not often stray from the Path of the Jobs.

A special version of OS X runs the iPhone.

OS X sports advanced features like Fast User Switching which is actually fast, Exposé, a window-management system, and Dashboard, a second layer over the desktop accessible by a user-definable hotkey with small JavaScript-based applications called "Widgets."

[edit] Command Line

Being a standard UNIX operating system, OS X comes with most of the common command line tools developers are familiar with. There are additional commands developers might find useful:

  • open - Opens the default application associated with a file. For example, open this.pdf will open this.pdf in the Preview application.
