UNIX is an operating system built in the 1960s and 1970s by a group at AT&T's Bell Labs including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and Douglas McIlroy. UNIX serves as the overall template for most modern operating systems except for Microsoft Windows. UNIX's maturity gives these operating systems stability and application longevity which Microsoft Windows lacks.
